Arrive George Airport - met and taken by road to the Wilderness National Park. Lunch and orientation. Afternoon forest walk along the banks of the Touw River.
Should see Bluemantled Flycatcher, Cape Batis, Cape Robin, Terrestrial Bulbul and Narina Trogon - to name a few birds.
Early rise. Travel 65 km to Natures valley for forest walk. Hope to see Chorister Robin, Starred Robin, Knysna Loerie, Grey Cuckoo Shrike, Forest Buzzard and Blackheaded Oriole. Then through fynbos (literally fine bush) - the Capes unique floral kingdom where we will see colourful proteas . Also Cape Sugarbirds, the spectacular Orangebreasted Sunbird and the elusive Victorins Warbler. From there to the Bitou and Keurbooms Rivers to view a variety of waders.
Lunch at Plettenberg Bay and perhaps a swim, if weather permits. Then a walk on the Robberg Peninsula Nature Reserve. Return to Wilderness Park.
Visit Malachite and Die Vleie Bird Hides - travel along the lakes to Knysna and the Woodbourne wetland. Lunch in Knysna. Take Outeniqua Choo-Choo (steam train) for 2½ hour journey to George through spectacular scenery. Birds to be seen, Collared and Malachite, Pied and Giant Kingfishers, Reed Warblers, Spoonbills, Avocets, Rails and Crakes.
Early rise. Over Outeniqua Mountains via Robinson Pass to Little Karoo - birding en route to Gamkaberg Reserve for Acacia Forest walk for Karoo birds - mostly endemic.
Visit winery and Ostrich Farm where we will lunch. Then Cango Caves in the afternoon.. Some of the birds we should see are - Layards Titbabbler, Pied Starling, Fairy Flycatcher, Pied Barbet, Karoo Chat and Mountain Chat.
Overnight at B & B in the foothills of the Swartberg.
Over the Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert - then to Meirings Poort, a spectacular 24km drive through the Swartberg Mountain via a narrow gorge. A drive through farms to the historic Montagu Pass into George and back to the Wilderness.
Amongst the birds we should see - Cape Rockjumper, Black Eagle, Protea Canary and Rock Thrushes.
Depart from George to your next destination.
