7 Day Tour (8 Nights)

Day One

Arrive George Airport - met and taken by road to the Wilderness National Park. Lunch and orientation. Afternoon forest walk along the banks of the Touw River. Should see Bluemantled Flycatcher, Cape Batis, Cape Robin, Terrestrial Bulbul and Narina Trogon.

Day Two

Early rise. Travel 65 km to Natures valley for forest walk. Hope to see Chorister Robin, Starred Robin, Knysna Loerie, Grey Cuckoo Shrike, Forest Buzzard and Blackheaded Oriole. Then through fynbos (literally fine bush) - the Cape’s unique floral kingdom where we will see colourful proteas . Also Cape Sugarbirds, the spectacular Orangebreasted Sunbird and the elusive Victorin’s Warbler. From there to the Bitou and Keurbooms Rivers to view a variety of waders. Lunch at Plettenberg Bay and perhaps a swim, if weather permits. Then a walk on the Robberg Peninsula Nature Reserve. Return to Wilderness Park.

Day Three

Visit Malachite and Die Vleie Bird Hides - travel along the lakes to Knysna and the Woodbourne wetland. Lunch in Knysna. Take Outeniqua Choo-Choo (steam train) for 2 hour journey to George through spectacular scenery. Birds to be seen, Collared, Malachite, Pied and Giant Kingfishers, Reed Warblers, Spoonbills, Avocets, Rails and Crakes.

Day Four

Early rise. Over Outeniqua Mountains via Robinson Pass to Little Karoo - birding en route to Gamkaberg Reserve for Acacia Forest walk for Karoo birds - mostly endemic.

Visit winery and Ostrich Farm where we will lunch. Then Cango Caves in the afternoon.. Some of the birds we will  see are - Layard’s Titbabbler, Pied Starling, Fairy Flycatcher, Pied Barbet, Karoo Chat and Mountain Chat.

Overnight at a Guest lodge in Oudtshoorn.

Day Five

Drive over the spectacular Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert - then on to Beaufort West and the Karoo National Park. Should arrive during the afternoon. Birds to be seen en route - Black Eagle, Cape Rock Jumper, Protea Canary, Cape Siskin, numerous Larks and Buntings.

Overnight at the Karoo Park.

Day Six

Karoo Park - early morning hike up onto the plateau. Luncheon and swim in the afternoon.

Late afternoon game and bird drive. Possible birds - Rock Thrush, Shorttoed Rock Thrush, Buntings, Barbets, Canaries, Prinias and Cisticolas. Overnight in the Karoo Park.

Day Seven

Early morning birding drive. Leave park after breakfast - through Meirings Poort - a 24 km drive right through the Swartberg Mountain via a narrow gorge. Incredible scenery. Then to the Montagu Pass in the Outeniqua Range through George to the Wilderness Park. Overnight in the Wilderness Park.
